HOW TO REACH
Cairns International Airport is the main entry point to the region, served both by international as well as domestic flights. The domestic and the international terminals are at walking distance from each other. All major cities in Asia, and New Zealand are connected from here. Shuttle bus transfers are available for transit from the Cairns Airport to the city every hour. Taxis are also available from the airport.
Cairns Station is in the city centre, at an easy walking distance from the waterfront and most hotels. Cairns and Brisbane are connected by Sunlander and Queensland Railways Tilt train services, however it takes over 32 hours for the full journey. Usually trips between Townsville and Cairns takes just 4 hours by car, it takes over 7 hours by rail. Between Cairns and Kuranda, The Kuranda Scenic Railway stops over the splendid Barron Gorge allowing passengers to get off the train and take in the beautiful view. The Savannahlander also travels between Cairns to Kuranda, but goes onward to Forsayth, a town in the outback.
The Bruce Highway, which is 1700 km long, runs south along the coast connecting Cairns and the state capital, Brisbane. Though it takes 22 hours to drive without stopping, It is recommended to split the journey over a couple of days for a more relaxed pace and to take advantage of towns in between, which make for good vantage points.
